RAGE Dev Diary: Enemies
ID talks about importance of enemy variation. Presents only five.
Category: News -- July 28, 2011 by Evil Scotsman
ID Software fills us in on the different enemy types to appear in their new game 'RAGE'. ID has been boasting a great story and enemy AI being able to out-wit the player. ID Design Director Matt Hooper explains how they want to vary the enemies and that fighting the same enemy for hours gets boring very fast. Very true, Painkiller was so good because it kept offering up new enemies and enviroments. Variation is always great, but then why would you say that then only have five enemy types. The enemies we're shown are the mutants, the high tech soldiers known as 'The authority' and then 3 types of bandits. Also included are hints to the story including human experimentation and the mysterious Authority....

Metro: Last Light Footage, Part 2
Part 2 in Metro: Last Light's 3 part trailer is ready for your viewing pleasure.
Category: News -- July 28, 2011 by kopimi
Metro: Last Light, sequel to Metro 2033, a post-apocalyptic shooter set in the metros of now defunct Moscow, has been teasing fans with some seriously cool footage being released in parts of a 3 part series. I present to you: Part 3. Keep in mind that, as with most demos, this isn't exactly how the level will appear ingame. The level has been tweaked a bit to show off all the great technology the game has to offer. That doesn't mean the game wont look incredibly sexy, it just means it's not going to look as complex as this, not that anyone would be able to tell the difference. Here's hoping part 3 introduces dinosaurs, I say we spice up the image of post-apocalyptic games for a change....

Red Faction Series Done?
Red Faction: Armageddon's bad sales may mean the end of a great series.
Category: News -- July 28, 2011 by kopimi

THQ has never had a consistent image in my head, which I think is a great thing. I could never pin down what kind of titles they were interested because it seems like they're a very open publisher that are willing to take risks, and they've heralded some amazing games as a result of this risk taking. But as with all risks, you have to face the consequences sometimes. THQ suffered a loss of $38.4 million, and Red Faction: Armageddon, the newest in the space-rebel slash angry construction worker series, took the blame for it. All of it. "We are disappointed in our first quarter financial performance. Sales of Red Faction: Armageddon and our licensed kids titles were below our expectations." - Brian Farrell, THQ CEO, via ShackNews As a result, Volition, the studio that has been developing the Red Faction series, has moved on to develop "Insane", a game series set to debut in 2013, headed by Guillermo del Toro. Farrell signed off with a grim reminder that the...

Ubisoft Claims it's DRM is a Success
Apparently penalizing customers and preventing offline play is
Category: News -- July 28, 2011 by kopimi

In an interview with PC Gamer, Ubisoft admitted that their new DRM, which forces players to stay connected to Ubisoft servers over the internet in order to play, has yielded "a clear reduction in piracy of our titles which required a persistent online connection, and from that point of view the requirement is a success." Sure, but making your games entirely unplayable will also yield the same effect. Just because something has succeeded in its goals doesn't mean its a good thing, especially when you consider the backlash caused by this DLC. If the DLC is such a success, why isn't it being used in their upcoming title, From Dust? As PC Gamer notes, Ubisoft has had the harshest digital rights management, or DRM, for as long as it has been around. Unfortunately that means that they've been sticking it to customers in the name of anti-piracy for a long time. I hope some day we can just admit that pirates will be pirates, and we don't need to go to extravagant measures to save ...

According to VG247, the beautiful and creative new god game, From Dust, which is being published by Ubisoft, will not utilize Ubisoft's invasive and inconvenient "online-DRM", which forces players to stay connected to Ubisoft servers to validate that they aren't pirates. "From Dust will not require a permanent online connection to play in single-player mode." - Ubisoft Representative, via VG247 This news is definitely a welcome surprise after the crash and burn Driver: San Francisco went through with Ubisoft's DRM....

Black Ops: Annihilation Out Now!
More map packs, woohoo?
Category: Reviews -- July 28, 2011 by kopimi

A new map pack DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops is now available on Steam! For $14.99 you get 4 brand new multiplayer maps, set in Area 51, a Soviet nuclear missile base, a 60's drive through and a golf course, along with a new Nazi Zombies map set in the palaces of Shangri-La. I'm not a fan of Call of Duty, nor am I fan of paid map packs, but I've got to say, these maps look enticing....
